Is there any advantage in removing the O ring from the barrel band to create a full floating barrel. Does it improve accuracy in any way?

The usual way to free float the barrel is to remove the band completely or fit a floating band which is half a band that holds the air cylinder only. The only way removing the existing O ring may work is if the barrel fits inside the existing band with a clear space all round, i.e. not touching the band. Your best bet is to completely remove the barrel band and test the pellet grouping to see if it is an improvement and then decide what action you need to take for the best.

The problem with barrel bands if the O ring puts the slightest pressure on the barrel the barrel is not free floating so if you remove the O ring make sure you can see daylight all the way round the barrel .

My barrel band actually forced my barrel downwards so removing the oring made no difference. I replaced the band with one from Rowan and group consistency definitely improved.

I just cut the original HW barrel band in half so it sat just below the stock . Works a treat and it's free.

Hey Bob, I'd be interested to know if you tried this and if so how did you get on? Cheers :)

I removed the o ring from the barrel band and it was plain to see that the barrel was slightly off centre. There was not a uniform size gap all around the barrel.
I managed to get hold of another barrel band that I cut down so it only went round the air cylinder which left the barrel completely free floating.

I have only been out once since but first impressions are that accuracy has improved and group sizes are smaller.

I can't get my head around why floating the barrel would help grouping, fair enough over the long term with temperature changes etc it might help with providing a constant zero, but short term over a shooting session I can't see what help it could be, could anyone enlighten me please.

Cheers
Gaz

One thing I have noticed for people that are still using the stock barrel band and have added a sling stud in place of the original stock bolt. Adding a bipod will significantly alter the POI. Pressure from the bipod will transfer to the barrel via the barrel band.

Obviously floating the barrel solves that issue as well.

What sort of grouping were you getting before floating the barrel

Quite a bit bigger than this and not very consistent. Sorry I didn't take any pics of previous groups but floating the barrel has definitely improved things in my case.

Once the sling stud is fitted and tightened up the stock and barrel band are locked together and you have zeroed your scope fitting a bipod will have no effect on the POI.
