Unread post weihrauch hw35 new spring problem
hi guys! first off i want to say hello, because its my first time on the forum.

i have a problem with my hw35, and i really can't figure it out.
when i found the gun on the attic of my granddad it shot, however it really wasn't powerful anymore. so i decided to add in a new spring and a new piston. also some new seals, because the old ones were screwed.

at first i only switched out the piston and the seals, because i didn't have a spring compressor. the gun shot fine afterwards, but i still wanted to switch the springs.
not long ago, i made a jig from wood which allowed me to switch out the springs quite safely. so i did that.

now here is the problem. the spring went in the gun fine, but once it was there it wouldn't latch anymore. it just seems to stop/block at the end of cocking, but it just doesn't latch. the trigger actually latches when i do it manually but it still doesn't hold the piston in place. i tried to adjust both trigger screws but i really can't make it work. however, once i try the old spring it works immediately.

does someone know what could've went wrong and how i can fix this issue?

thanks in advance,

maurits

Hi - Welcome to WOC :D

My first guess would be that the new spring is being compressed to solid and the piston cannot travel far enough to latch.

thanks for the reply!

i think that that would be strange though, because i bought it specifically for a hw35. could the rifle's year of production matter? the rifle i have is (at least!) 20 years old, maybe even older.

Check that there has been no pre-load left in (often missed at the piston end).
Measure the diameter of the wire (typically 3.25mm) and multiply by the number of coils, this will give you a close approximation to the spring's solid length.
With the spring removed, measure as best you can, the length available for the spring when the rifle is cocked. (I wish I had written this down long ago, it would have saved you a lot of trouble) (maybe someone on here knows what it is?)

If they are close it is likely to be a solid spring and coil(s) will need to be taken off.

My 35 is a 1979 model with original leather piston seal, I do not run this over about 10.5fpe (about 14.25j) in .22 and quite a bit less in .177 - I have never had to use a spring compressor but the spring is still quite hefty compared to rifles of similar power.

Another possibility is that the spring diameter is too large, this increases as the spring is compressed and can lead to the spring binding inside the piston - is there a piston liner fitted?

(if you give me the first 3 digits of the serial number I can tell you it's age)

thanks for the info! tonight when i am at home i will try and measure the spring and the chamber, and check for a preload.

i will post the chamber length here, if anybody else encounters the problem they can use it.

my serial no. is 486235. what source are you using? that may come in handy with the other hw35 i have.

what is a piston liner?

It's coming in as a 1973 model, I use http://www.weihrauch-database.eu/dywp# (don't forget to tick the box).

At 73 this is the short stroke piston later synthetic seal piston models have a longer stroke. The later spring is about a coil longer than the older ones.

hi guys!

first of all: thanks for the info! i had a busy couple of days and haven't got the chance to measure the chambers yet. i will in the near future, both off a new and old model (my other wh35 is the newer chamber length). i think i will just order a new mainspring then. do you have any suggestions where to find a powerful mainspring for the old one?

thanks!

Its the piston rod that is a different length not the cylinder.

You can also fit the new type piston (longer stroke) into the early HW35 & use the old spring .
