Unread post HW97K stock refinish help
Hi all, I have 2 of these rifles one of which I plan to sell to fund a KT and one I'm Gonna keep but the stock is not as nice as I would like so I'm gonna have a go at refinishing it. I have taken advice from my local stockist who has supplied me with a couple of products for refinishing when stained but my 2 concerns are stripping the chequering as I don't want to be sanding those areas and a stain to get a near a colour match as the original. Any tips, help, advice appreciated.

I always clean the chequering with a tooth brush and cellulose thinners

Does that take it back to bare wood though?

You can never hope to take the chequering back to bare wood, the stain will have penetrated deeper than it is cut but I've never found it to be a problem.

In fact I quite often refinish a stock without stain, just oiled - here for example (my 77s)

Looks the business that mate well done, so are you saying strip all the plain wood and just clean the chequering with solvent to start a fresh baring in mind the stock I'm going to do does have marks hence the strip back?

I completely strip the stock back bare wood, removing all marks - first with about 80grit down to about 240/360, then down to 0000 wire wool.

If I stain I use a technique called "ebonising" on Beech (Walnut always just gets oiled).

It is very rare that I will use a finish other than oil.

Here's a few of my "ebonisings" off another forum (most are on here somewhere)

-------------------------------

I've already mentioned that when I restore a rifle I usually use a technique called "Ebonizing" if I stain a stock.
It's very simple - Iron Acetate (wire wool soaked in vinegar) is the active ingredient, it darkens the Tannin in the wood - additional Tannin can be added to get a darker effect (a nice cup of tea).

The results are never predictable but that's why I like it - every one is unique.

Here's a few from the archives - I'll add more as I find them and of course as I do others - if anyone tries this please post pics.

Webley Stingray Express - Beech

Bsa Mercury - Beech

Gamo CF16 (sold) - Beech (I think)

Westlake B2 (sold) - Absolutley no idea

BSA   Meteor Mk1 - Beech

Image Image

Webley Omega Carbine - Beech

Image Image

Webley Vulcan Mk2 - Beech

Image Image

And of course my latest one, BSA Super Meteor Mk5 with my other one - Beech

Quite a variety of finishes don't you think

Thanks for all that info springer. So the way I intend to go is paint strip the whole stock and sand to a smooth finish leaving the chequering alone other than maybe a bit of wire wool then either stain with walnut or just tru-oil the bare wood, depends how I feel by then. Any comments on my method appreciated, thanks again.

nitromore the stock to get the laquer off then sand down as has2beaspringer has said. I use a grain filler next then stain. After that I put one coat of tru oil on every night using my finger to rub it in. Before the next coat I use fine wire wool then oil again. I use wire wool for the next 10 coats then after that use very fine wet and dry. I stop at 20 coats in total as I cannot see the grain getting any deeper after that. The chequering takes the stain like the rest of the stock and looks ok after the oiling. Hope this helps.

I just happen to be doing a stock at the moment, thought a few pics would help.

Air Arms Prosport in poor condition - was "camo" (you can see why now) but that's been stripped:

Image Image

Here after first sanding - down to 80 grit - quite a lot of detailed "hand work" on this one.

Image Image

Notice how the stain/dye on the end grain has penetrated deeply, it would be almost impossible to sand it all out. Here shown wiped over with white spirit to highlight it:

Image Image

Next stage is to take it down to about 240 grit, then fine wire wool. It's on hold for a day or so, waiting for the owner to decide on finished colour (will do a few trial patches then sand them out).

Looking good mate , can't help thinking that the darker chequering enhances the overall look.

Here's the finished item, the owner chose "American Walnut" wood dye and it has a first coat of oil:

Shown here how the chequering has blended in:
