Just been offered a 1984 HW77, not seen it in the flesh but photos show stock needing referb and rust on the barrel & body but can't see how bad it is.
It's going for £75, but was hoping to get it for £50 is this a reasonable offer??
Steve

To be honest Steve if you don't ask you don't get mate. What's the worse the person will say....no. I recently brought a spotter scope of a well known auction site. They were asking £50 or make an offer. I offered a cheeky £40 for it, not expecting to get it but they accepted the offer. So in my opinion ask them and see what they say , you have nothing to lose.

As said you can try,its well worth it remember the parts alone are worth more than that broken up & it should have the 25mm internals.

Well done the deal today, got it for £65 which after all the comments (thanks all) seems fair.
Photos attached.
Serial No. 1010225 1984 (I believe), looking at spares on Chambers site it is the Mk1 with 25mm compression tube.
Stock in reasonable condition a few dings as can be expected but most can be rectified, barrel and body rusted with a few pits, one deep scratch by scope mount and back block has a circular scratch so probably done by less than careful removal. The internals feel pretty smooth, caked in grease but that's probably a good thing, breach coated in grease also. I tried cocking the action but it does not engage (any thoughts??), trigger blade is broken. Looking at the spring it has a square section, is this an original?
Plenty to do but hopefully a labour of love.

Well done - yes 1984 (mines 1014314) - and a slip on silencer :D

Should be 25mm (they sell for more than £65) - not engaging could be a number of things, it may become obvious when you strip it down - trigger blades are readily available (could even go for reach-back) - original spring would not be square section.

Have fun :D

Its a good purchase,it needs a full strip, degrease & relube .The square section is non standard as hasba says.
In the pic it looks like there is a screw at the side of the sear but it may be grease.

Yes a good find, the funny thing is the chap who put me on to it has a early HW33, had it since he was a kid, apparently it's been in bits awaiting re-assembly for several years now, but he won't part with it, sentimental value and a desire to get out with it again to relive his youth (sound familiar to anyone). Got my name down if he changes his mind though.
I must admit I had not realised the value of the component parts of the 77 until I looked on Chambers site, i.e. the 'end catch unit' at £66.49. I have no intention of selling but it may take a while to get this project done, I have still to finish the HW80 in got last year.
I will certainly try and get it stripped out, cleaned up and assess the work needed, she was in a loft and unloved for a long time so I'm sure a while longer won't hurt until I can bring her back to life again.
Steve

Managed to get time to strip / clean her down this evening, well there a few things that need attention and replacement.
The main spring is broken, incidentally the preload on the spring was 60mm so I would imagine it was most probably over the legal limit, due to the broken spring and obviously plenty of use in this condition the piston has been worn through along the cocking shoe recess (see photo) so a new piston is required, assuming I will struggle to get a replacement 25mm piston I will need a piston and compression tube. The trigger needs stripping and polishing as it does no **** smoothly, it initially didn't **** but after adjustment of the bottom sear screw it does now cocks.
The barrel is loose in the main body, it looks like someone had tried to fix this with solder as there was a thin coating around the end of barrel in the breech, this came out when cleaning this area. Anyone know how the fix this properly??
I need to remove the cocking lever latch unit, how is this done?? It looks like there is a small pin on the right side.
The barrel and main body need cleaning back prior to re-bluing.
Stock needs stripping and refinishing.

Parts list so far
25mm piston or 26mm piston and compression tube
Main spring
Tin-bum tuning kit
Trigger blade
Rear trigger guard screw
2 x front stock screws

That looks like it's just a piston sleeve that's worn through - it should just slide out and be replaced if necessary. :D

I don't think that would be solder - most likely a pellet that has been dropped in the breech and hammered countless times.

Are you sure the barrel is loose? - this is rare.

The under-lever latch is loctited on - heat it up and tap it off.

I've changed all my front stock screws for these - i-do-like-those-little-details-front-stock-screws-t23956.html?hilit=i%20do%20like%20those%20little%20details - so if you need two, PM me your address - I'll drop a couple in the post.

As hastobeaspringer says, the piston is fine, just be careful when taking the piston liner out, they are like a razor blade. The front block does need to be heated up and will tap off but can need quite some force to do it. I don't think there is a pin holding it , certainly the mk 2 catch I took off didn't.

Yes of course it's the sleeve, that never occurred to me on Sunday but I most probably would have realised this when trying to remove the broken part of the spring (next w/e now), that cheers me up as I don't need a piston, I was wanting to keep it true to it's original parts.

I have checked the barrel again and yes it definitely has slight movement, when cleaning the parts I used 'Gunk' (there was loads of grease caked everywhere) and when making the two parts move/flex you could see this bubbling where the barrel enters the body. Any ideas on resolving this??

The latch has what looks like a pin in the right hand side, but now I know this is not a pin I can only assume it is an indent where the grub screw for the slip on silencer seats. My only slight hesitation on removal is that there looks to be a small crack in the latch unit below the ball bearing where the cocking level sits, TLC require here, I used my wife's hair dryer to remove a screw from my S200 that was thread locked on and wouldn't budge, it is surprising how hot it gets.

The stock screws look really smart, are they sitting in a cup like on the HW100??

Thanks for your input guys

Steve
